Deep Design

Sitting on my bed in an apartment in Tulum Town, the late afternoon sunlight is shining on a balcony outside the sliding glass door which is closed 99% of the time because it’s too hot and we have the air conditioning running. I just moved here from Costa Rica where I didn’t worry so much about saving energy since the entire country was powered by renewable resources, I am still adapting to the harshness of a world which does not prioritize care for the environment. I’m not sure how long I’ll last this time.

Mexico is a very new experience, its rebelliously happy spirit bordering on anarchy pushes my capacity for contrast to the limit. I’ve moved here in pursuit of inspiration, complexity, and adventure, things I realize most people avoid or ignore all together. I’ve begun to hear the voice of the land here, she speaks loudly and insistently, through people and the elements.

I’m attracted to Tulum because of a few things…

  1. How quickly it’s growing

  2. How informal development is

  3. The unique cultural context

  4. The unique social dynamics

Some things I keep noticing here…

  1. Lots of ecological architecture

  2. Sustainable development is needed here

  3. Indigenous and modern consciousness are clashing

  4. Ancient history and ecological degradation side by side

I’m reminded of my work on the Urban Climate Catalyst and I wonder if there’s a way to organize, catalyze, or incubate regenerative culture here in Tulum. (Link)
